Google Ads in Australia: A Plain-English Guide for Small Businesses
Google Ads is the paid side of Google search. You choose the searches you want to appear for, write an ad, set a daily budget in AUD, and pay when someone clicks. Done well, it puts your business in front of people at the exact moment they are looking for what you sell. Done badly, it quietly spends money on clicks that never turn into a call.
This guide explains how Google Ads works for Australian small and medium businesses, what it costs, which campaign types matter, and the setup mistakes we see most often.
What Google Ads actually is
Google Ads is Google’s advertising platform. Your ads can show in several places:
- Google Search, above and below the organic results, marked “Sponsored”
- Google Maps, for people searching nearby
- YouTube, before or during videos
- The Google Display Network, millions of websites and apps that carry Google ads
Most small businesses get the best return from Search first, because the person has already typed what they want.
How Google Ads works
Every time someone searches, Google runs a quick auction among the advertisers who want that search. It is not simply the highest bidder who wins. Google calculates an Ad Rank for each ad using:
- Your maximum bid
- The quality of your ad and landing page
- How relevant the ad is to the search
- The context of the search, such as location, device and time of day
- The expected impact of extras like call buttons, sitelinks and location details
Quality Score
Inside your account, each keyword gets a Quality Score from 1 to 10. It is based on expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. A higher score usually means better positions at a lower cost per click. You improve it by matching the keyword, the ad text and the landing page closely, not by bidding more.
Keywords and match types
You tell Google which searches you care about through keywords and match types:
- Broad match lets Google show your ad for related searches it thinks are relevant. Wide reach, but it needs close watching.
- Phrase match shows your ad when the search includes the meaning of your phrase.
- Exact match keeps you to searches with the same meaning as your keyword.
Just as important are negative keywords, which stop your ad showing for searches you do not want. A paid course provider might add “free”, and a new car dealer might add “used” or “second hand”.
Google Ads campaign types
When you create a campaign, Google asks for a goal and a campaign type. The main ones:
| Campaign type | Where ads show | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Google search results | Service businesses, leads, calls |
| Performance Max | Search, Maps, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Discover | Businesses with good conversion tracking and creative assets |
| Shopping | Product listings with image and price | Online stores using Google Merchant Center |
| Display | Websites and apps | Remarketing and brand awareness |
| Video | YouTube | Awareness and consideration |
| Demand Gen | YouTube, Discover, Gmail | Visual campaigns for building demand |
If you are new to Google Ads and sell a service, start with a Search campaign. Performance Max can work well, but it leans on Google’s automation and needs reliable conversion data before it has anything good to learn from.
How much does Google Ads cost in Australia?
There is no minimum spend. You set an average daily budget. Google can spend up to twice that on a busy day, but over a month it will not charge more than about 30.4 times your daily budget. What you pay per click depends on your industry, your location, how many competitors are bidding and your Quality Score.
Legal, finance, trades and home services searches tend to cost more per click than many retail searches, because one new client is worth a lot. A click in a busy capital city is often dearer than the same search in a regional town.
A simple way to set a starting budget:
- Work out what a new customer is worth to you in AUD.
- Estimate how many enquiries it takes to win one customer.
- Use the Keyword Planner inside Google Ads to see estimated cost per click for your main keywords in your area.
- Set a budget that buys enough clicks each month to learn something, then review after four to six weeks.
Google bills Australian accounts in AUD. Keep your Google invoices for your bookkeeping and ask your accountant how GST applies to your ad spend.

Setting up your first campaign
You can open an account at ads.google.com with a Google account. Before you spend a dollar, get these pieces in place.
1. Conversion tracking
Decide what counts as a result: a phone call, a contact form, a booking or a sale. Set up conversion tracking with Google Tag Manager or the Google tag so the account can see which keywords produce enquiries. Without it, you are judging by clicks, and clicks do not pay the bills.
2. A landing page that matches the ad
Send people to a page about the exact service they searched for, not your homepage. The page should load quickly on a phone, show your phone number clearly, and make the next step obvious. If you are tidying your site first, our website build service can help.
3. Location targeting
Target the suburbs, cities or radius you actually service. In location settings, choose to target people in your area rather than people who have only shown interest in it, unless you deliberately want visitors and travellers.
4. Tight ad groups
Group keywords by service. “Roof restoration” and “gutter cleaning” should be in separate ad groups with their own ads and landing pages.
5. Assets
Add sitelinks, callouts, a call asset with your business number and a location asset linked to your Google Business Profile. These make your ad bigger and give people more ways to contact you.
Common Google Ads mistakes we see
- Leaving broad match running with no negative keywords. Check the search terms report weekly in the early months.
- Accepting every automatic recommendation. Some are useful. Some mainly increase spend. Read each one before applying it.
- Leaving Display Network ticked inside a Search campaign. That mixes very different traffic into one set of results.
- No call handling plan. If ads make the phone ring while you are on a job, missed calls are lost money. A tool like the DU AI Receptionist can answer, capture details and pass the lead on.
- Judging too early. A few days of data says very little. Give a campaign enough clicks before making big changes.
Google Ads vs SEO vs Meta Ads
Google Ads, SEO and Meta Ads do different jobs.
- Google Ads captures people already searching. It starts quickly and stops when you stop paying.
- SEO builds organic visibility that keeps working without paying per click, but it takes months. See our SEO Australia service and Local SEO pages.
- Meta Ads on Facebook and Instagram reach people based on interests and behaviour, before they search. Our Meta Ads agency page covers how we run them.
Many Australian businesses use Google Ads for immediate enquiries while SEO builds in the background. Our guide to building a digital marketing strategy shows how to fit the channels together.
Should you run Google Ads yourself or use an agency?
Running it yourself makes sense if you have a small local service area, a few core services, and the time to check the account every week. Google’s free Skillshop training is worth doing.
An agency or specialist makes sense when the account is spending enough that small inefficiencies add up, when you have many services or locations, or when nobody in the business has time to manage it properly. Whoever runs it, make sure the account is in your business’s name and you keep admin access.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google Ads worth it for small businesses in Australia?
It can be, when people search for what you sell and you track enquiries properly. It suits services people look for when they need them, such as trades, clinics and professional services. It is harder to make work for products people rarely search for.
What is the minimum budget for Google Ads?
Google has no set minimum. The practical minimum is enough budget to buy a meaningful number of clicks in your area each month, which depends on your industry’s cost per click. Use Keyword Planner to estimate it.
How long does Google Ads take to work?
Most ads are reviewed within a business day and can start showing once approved. Getting a campaign efficient takes longer, often several weeks of data, search term cleanup and ad testing.
What is the difference between Google Ads and Google AdWords?
They are the same platform. Google renamed AdWords to Google Ads in 2018.
